The story

A magnolia that waits for spring.

Tulip-shaped flowers, reddish-purple outside and white inside, open on bare branches a couple of weeks after the early magnolias. That delay is the point: a late frost rarely browns them. It stays small, as a multi-stem shrub or little tree.

Light

Full sun to part shade. More sun, more flowers.

Water

Water weekly the first two summers. The roots are shallow, so mulch and water in drought.

Planting

Plant in spring in rich, slightly acidic soil. Set it at grade; magnolias resent being moved, so pick the spot once.

It brings magnolia flowers to small yards and cold climates that usually lose them to frost.
