The story

Red maple speed, silver maple toughness.

Often sold as a red maple, it's actually a cross between red and silver maple. It grows fast, takes heat and drought better than red maple, and turns orange-red in fall and holds the color for weeks.

Deep watering weekly for two summers. After that, it handles average dry spells.

Planting

Spring or fall. Set the root flare at soil level; don't bury the trunk. Mulch wide, not deep.
