The story

The late-summer shift worker.

Seven-son flower blooms in late summer, when most shrubs are done, with clusters of small, fragrant white flowers that bees and butterflies crowd. After the petals fall, the calyces turn rosy red and look like a second bloom. In winter the tan bark peels in strips.

Light

Full sun for the most flowers. Part shade is fine.

Water

Weekly the first summer. Moderately drought tolerant once established.

Planting

Average, well-drained soil. It tolerates clay and a range of pH.

Four seasons of interest from one small tree.
