The story

A blue column for dry ground.

A selection of the Rocky Mountain juniper, the tree that holds slopes together out West. It grows into a dense, silver-blue pyramid 15 to 20 feet tall and keeps that color through winter. Heat, wind and thin soil don't faze it.

Light

Full sun. In shade it thins out and loses its blue.

Water

Weekly the first season. After that, only in long droughts. Wet feet do more damage than dry spells.

Planting

Spring or fall, with the root flare level with the soil, in lean, well-drained ground. Raise the bed if you have heavy clay.

Year-round blue and real height without the width of a spruce.
