The story

The cherry blossom, in full bloom.

Heavy clusters of double pink flowers, thirty or so petals each, cover a vase-shaped tree for about two weeks in spring. It's the cherry that lines Washington, D.C.'s Tidal Basin after the single whites finish. Fall leaves turn bronze and orange.

Light

Full sun.

Water

Weekly the first two summers, deeply. Then in drought.

Planting

Spring or fall, root flare at grade, in well-drained soil. Avoid low, wet spots.

Two weeks a year it's the best thing on the street, and the rest of the time it's a good shade tree.
