The story
Red stems do the talking.
Thick leaves with a bright chartreuse center and a dark green margin, held on red-speckled stems that bleed color up into the leaf. Dark lavender flowers open on red stems in July. The thick leaves hold up well to slugs.
Light
Part shade with some morning sun; full shade works too.
Water
About an inch a week. Keep it evenly moist the first summer.
Planting
Spring or now in fall, in rich, well-drained soil, crown at soil level.
