The story

Red flowers for the holidays.

A sasanqua camellia with single, bright red flowers around a bold boss of yellow stamens. They open from late fall into winter, when the rest of the garden has quit, against dense, glossy dark green leaves. It grows upright and takes shaping well.

Light

Full sun to part shade. Afternoon shade in the hottest areas.

Water

Weekly the first two years. Steady moisture while buds form in late summer.

Planting

Acidic, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Set the root ball slightly above grade.

Evergreen structure all year and flowers in December.
