The story

The camellia in your cup.

Green, black and oolong tea all come from this one evergreen camellia. It grows into a dense shrub of glossy, serrated leaves, with small fragrant white flowers in fall. Pick the top two leaves and a bud from new growth and process them yourself.

Light

Morning sun and afternoon shade in the South. Full sun in cooler climates.

Water

Keep soil evenly moist, about an inch a week. It dislikes drying out and standing water equally.

Planting

Acidic soil, pH 5–6.5, rich in organic matter. Set the top of the root ball slightly above grade.

A handsome evergreen hedge you can also drink.
