The story

A native with a wardrobe.

New leaves come in bright orange and age to deep burgundy. White flower clusters appear in late spring, then red seed heads. Underneath, it's a tough North American native that handles cold, drought and poor soil.

Light

Full sun for the strongest orange and burgundy. Tolerates part shade.

Water

Weekly the first summer. After that, only in long dry spells.

Planting

Spring or fall, crown level with the soil. Any well-drained soil, including clay.

Dark foliage for contrast, from a shrub that does not need babysitting.
