The story

For the spot that stays soggy.

Soft rush is a native of marshes and pond edges across most of the country. It makes a tidy fountain of round, dark green stems with small brown flower tufts in summer. Put it where water collects and nothing else will grow.

Light

Full sun to part shade. More sun means stiffer, more upright stems.

Water

Keep it wet. It handles a few inches of standing water; dry soil is the one thing it won't take.

Planting

Plant in spring or fall at a pond edge, in a rain garden or in any low spot. Heavy clay is fine.

It turns a drainage problem into a planting.
