The story

Fine grass, finer haze.

A compact selection of a native grass: a low, dark green tuft that sends up airy flower heads in early summer. They open greenish and ripen to gold, hanging over the clump like a haze through fall. It takes shade and damp soil, which most ornamental grasses won't.

Light

Full sun in the North, part shade where summers run hot. Afternoon shade keeps the foliage fresh.

Water

Average to moist soil. Water weekly in dry spells; it does not like to dry out completely.

Planting

Spring or early fall, crown level with the soil. Fine in clay and under black walnut, which is a short list.

One of the few grasses that glows in part shade.
