The story

Wine-red by midsummer.

Blue-green blades start blushing red in early summer and are full burgundy by July, topped with a haze of airy, wine-colored seed heads. It's a compact, upright switch grass that fits where the big ones won't.

Light

Full sun for the best color and straightest stems. Part sun works, with less red.

Water

Water weekly the first season. Established plants handle drought.

Planting

Plant in spring or early fall, crown at soil level. Clay is fine as long as it isn't waterlogged.

Native, tidy, and colorful for months, at a size that works in small beds and pots.
