The story

The rhododendron for cold places.

A small-leaved rhododendron that covers itself in purple-pink flower clusters in spring. It's from the same hardy line as the classic PJM, a little later to bloom and a little stronger in color. The leaves turn plum-purple in winter.

Light

Morning sun, light afternoon shade. Takes more sun than most rhododendrons.

Water

Keep evenly moist; water in dry spells, including fall before the ground freezes.

Planting

Spring or fall, an inch high in acidic, well-drained soil amended with pine bark. Never in heavy clay.

Reliable spring color and winter foliage where big-leaf rhododendrons sulk.
