The story

The polite trumpet vine.

A Southeast native that climbs by tendrils and holds on without prying at mortar. Orange trumpets with yellow throats cover it in spring, with a few more through summer, and hummingbirds visit all of them. It stays semi-evergreen in mild winters.

Light

Full sun for the heaviest bloom. It grows in part shade but flowers less.

Water

Weekly the first summer. Once established it handles dry spells.

Planting

Plant 12 in. from the base of the support and lean the stems toward it. Average, well-drained soil.

Fast cover and hummingbirds, without the takeover habits of trumpet creeper.
