The story

The bee balm for dry ground.

Tiers of small yellow flowers spotted in purple sit on pink-lavender bracts that hold their color for weeks. It's a native of sandy fields, it smells like oregano when you brush it, and bees, wasps and butterflies all come.

Light

Full sun. It takes light shade but gets leggy.

Water

Water weekly the first summer. After that, only in a long dry spell; it prefers dry to soggy.

Planting

Plant in spring or fall in lean, well-drained soil. Sand and gravel are fine. Skip the compost.

A tough native that feeds a crowd of pollinators in dry spots other bee balms sulk in.
