The story

Winter, in red.

Deep rose-red flowers set against thick, glossy, dark green leaves, opening from winter into spring when the rest of the garden is bare. It grows upright and rounded, so it works as a specimen or an evergreen screen.

Light

Part shade. Morning sun, afternoon shade, or bright high shade under trees.

Water

Evenly moist, never soggy. Water deeply in dry spells, especially in late summer and fall when buds form.

Planting

Spring or fall in acidic soil, with the top of the root ball slightly above grade. Planting too deep is the most common way to lose a camellia.

Flowers in the dead of winter, from a shrub that's handsome the rest of the year too.
