The story
An evergreen fern that shines.
Glossy, dark green fronds in a tidy, vase-shaped clump that stay green through winter. New fronds unfurl in spring with their tips flopped back like tassels, hence the name. It comes from Japan and Korea and settles into shady gardens here without fuss.
Light
Part to full shade. Morning sun is fine; afternoon sun scorches the fronds.
Water
Keep evenly moist, especially the first year. Established plants handle short dry spells.
Planting
Plant in spring or fall in humus-rich, well-drained soil with the crown at soil level.
Winter green in the shade garden, when nearly everything else is gone.
