Evenly moist, never soggy. Water deeply in dry spells, especially in late summer and fall when buds form.
Spring or fall in acidic soil, with the top of the root ball slightly above grade. Planting too deep is the most common way to lose a camellia.
Acid-loving plant fertilizer after flowering, and lightly again in early summer.
Right after bloom, to shape. Pruning later removes next winter's flower buds.
Blooms winter into spring. Feed and prune after bloom. Buds set in late summer.
Tea scale under the leaves and bud drop from drought or a hard freeze. Yellow leaves mean the soil isn't acidic enough. Non-toxic to cats and dogs.
Why we stock it: Flowers in the dead of winter, from a shrub that's handsome the rest of the year too.
