The story

A panicle hydrangea that fits.

Most panicle hydrangeas want an 8-ft circle. This one stays 2–3 ft, with upright cones that open creamy white and turn rose and burgundy as nights cool.

Light

Full sun to part shade; more sun gives sturdier stems and deeper color.

Water

Keep evenly moist the first summer. Water in long dry spells after that.

Planting

Plant in spring or fall in average, well-drained soil. Soil pH doesn't change the color of panicle hydrangeas.
