The story

Gold marble, no dirt required

Spade-shaped leaves marbled in green and gold on vines that trail or climb. Choose it grown in water in a glass bowl, no soil, or in a grey ceramic pot. Either way it's the low-stress option.

Light

Medium to bright, indirect light. More light keeps the gold marbling; low light turns it greener.

Water

In water: keep the roots covered, top it up as the level drops and refresh it every 2–3 weeks. In soil: water when the top inch is dry.

Pot and soil

In water: a clean glass vessel and plain water, roots only, no soil, with a drop of liquid fertilizer monthly. It can move to soil later, but pick one and stick with it; switching back and forth stresses the roots. In soil: any standard potting mix with drainage.

It's the easiest way to put something green on a desk without involving a bag of soil.
