What it comes in
Glass water-culture bowl or 4.5 in. ceramic pot; in soil, size up one inch at a time.
Red stems, shifting leaves
Bright red stems in an upright clump, pushing out spade-shaped leaves that shift from red to amber to green. Choose it grown in water in a glass bowl, no soil, or in a ceramic pot.
Light
Medium to bright, indirect light. More light means redder new leaves.
Water
In water: keep the roots covered, top it up as the level drops and refresh it every 2–3 weeks. In soil: water when the top inch is dry.
Pot and soil
In water: a clean glass vessel and plain water, roots only, no soil, with a drop of liquid fertilizer monthly. It can move to soil later, but pick one and stick with it; switching back and forth stresses the roots. In soil: a chunky mix of potting soil, bark and perlite.
It's fall color that doesn't drop its leaves in November.
