The story

The shrub that isn't.

A native perennial that builds into a shrub-sized clump of blue-green leaves with spires of indigo pea flowers in late spring. The flowers turn into fat black seed pods that rattle in the wind into winter.

Light

Full sun for the most flowers and an upright shape. It takes part shade but may flop open.

Water

Water weekly the first summer. After that the taproot handles drought.

Planting

Plant in spring or fall in average, well-drained soil. Dig a deep hole; it won't want to move later.

One of the longest-lived perennials you can plant, and it gets better every year.
