The story
Pink cups for tough ground.
Satiny, cup-shaped pink flowers with yellow centers, open by day, covering a low, spreading plant from late spring through summer. Heat, drought and poor soil do not slow it down.
Light
Full sun for the most flowers.
Water
Water to establish, then leave it dry.
Planting
Plant in spring in lean, well-drained soil. It behaves better in poor soil than rich.
A native that blooms hard in the hottest, driest, worst-soil spots in the yard.

Who it feeds
Bred from a native. USDA records the parent species growing wild in your state, inside its native range. USDA PLANTS
- Caterpillars About 18 kinds of native butterflies and moths raise their caterpillars on Oenothera, going by the median county in a nationwide study. Caterpillars are what songbirds feed their chicks. Source
- Specialist bees 4 bee species in the eastern U.S. gather pollen from only a few plant groups, and Oenothera is one of them. Source
