The story

Red flowers for the hummingbirds.

A selection of a native Texas sage that stays under a foot tall, with rounded, scalloped leaves and spikes of bright red tubular flowers from late spring through summer. Hummingbirds find it fast. In the wild it grows in the dappled shade of cedars, hence the name.

Light

Full sun to part shade. In hot summers it's happier with afternoon shade.

Water

Water when the top inch of soil dries. Established plants are drought tolerant; soggy soil kills them.

Planting

Plant in spring or early fall in gritty, well-drained soil, or a container mix with extra grit.

Months of red flowers in a plant small enough for a pot or the front of a dry bed.
