The story

Pink bracts, big presence.

A clary sage grown for tall spikes of pink-tinged bracts that hold for weeks in early summer, over broad, wrinkled, aromatic leaves. It's a biennial: leaves the first year, flowers the second. The scent is strong and musky, which some people love and deer do not.

Light

Full sun.

Water

Water to get it established. After that it prefers the dry side; wet winter soil rots the crown.

Planting

Plant in fall or spring in lean, well-drained soil.

Big, architectural early-summer color from a plant that gets by on dry soil.
