The story

The leaf in the curry.

Glossy double leaves, one growing out of the tip of the next, with a sharp floral citrus scent when torn. That leaf is what Thai curries and tom yum call for. The bumpy little limes are mostly for zest.

Full sun outdoors; the brightest window indoors.

Water

Water deeply when the top inch is dry. Never let it sit in water.

Planting

Use a fast-draining citrus mix in a pot with drainage holes. In the ground, only where frost is rare.

Fresh makrut leaves are hard to buy and easy to grow.
