The story

A pomegranate from the Caucasus.

A hardy pomegranate, also sold as 'Russian 26', that survives winters most pomegranates don't. Flame-orange flowers in late spring, then big fruit with deep-red, soft-seeded arils, sweet-tart. Self-fertile.

Light

Full sun. The hotter, the better.

Water

Weekly the first year. Established plants handle drought; steady water in late summer prevents split fruit.

Planting

Spring. Any well-drained soil, including alkaline.

Homegrown pomegranates in places that aren't Southern California.
