The story
A fern that fills in.
Upright, lance-shaped fronds in a fresh bright green, with leaflets that run down the stem like a ladder. It spreads by creeping roots into a loose colony, which is exactly what you want under trees.
Light
Part shade to full shade.
Water
Keep it moist, especially the first year. It adapts to drier soil once settled but looks best with steady water.
Planting
Plant in spring or early fall with the crown just at the surface, in soil with plenty of organic matter.
A tall, easy groundcover for shade that looks fresh from spring to frost.
