The story

A small orchard on one trunk.

Three apple varieties grafted onto one rootstock, picked so they bloom together and pollinate each other. You get a mix of eating and cooking apples, ripening a little apart from late summer into fall.

Light

Full sun, at least six hours. More sun, sweeter fruit.

Water

Deep weekly watering for the first two summers, then during dry spells and while fruit is sizing.

Planting

Plant in early spring or fall. Keep the graft union a couple of inches above the soil. Stake for the first year.

It solves the apple pollination problem in the space of one tree.
