The story

The dependable lychee.

Rough pink-red fruit with translucent, sweet-tart white flesh and a floral perfume. 'Mauritius' is the variety Florida growers rely on because it sets fruit more consistently than most. The glossy evergreen tree is handsome on its own.

Light

Full sun, sheltered from strong wind.

Water

Water deeply and regularly while young and while fruit grows. Ease off in late fall to cue flowering.

Planting

Spring, in acidic, well-drained soil. Avoid alkaline or limestone soils.

Fresh lychees, picked ripe, are a different fruit.
