The story

The mission fig.

Brought to California by Franciscan missionaries in the 1700s. Purple-black skin, strawberry-red flesh and a rich, sweet flavor that gets better dried. Self-fertile, with an early crop on last year's wood and a main crop in late summer.

Light

Full sun, and the hottest spot you have.

Water

Weekly the first summer. Then deep, infrequent watering; even moisture while fruit ripens.

Planting

Spring, in any soil that drains. Plant a couple of inches deeper than in the pot.

Fresh figs, which never travel well enough to buy good ones.
