The story

The first tree to bloom.

Rosy-pink flowers line the bare branches in early spring, before a single leaf shows. Then come heart-shaped leaves that turn yellow in fall. It's native across most of the eastern half of the country and an early meal for bees.

Full sun to part shade. It grows wild at woodland edges.

Water

Water weekly the first two summers. Fairly drought tolerant after that.

Planting

Plant in spring or fall in well-drained soil. Pick the spot carefully; the taproot makes later moves hard.
