Home kit

The Climber.

One monstera, taught to climb.

Left alone, a monstera sprawls sideways and takes over the room. Give it a pole and it goes up instead, with bigger leaves as it climbs. The pole, the clips and the food come in the box, so there is no second trip.

In this kit: Something to climb

Pole

Give it something to climb.

A natural-fiber, plastic-free pole with a bark-like texture for aerial roots to grab. The center is hollow, so you can water straight down to the roots. Comes in 19 and 30 inches, and they stack.

How to use: Set it in the pot at repotting time and clip the stems on as they grow. Made for monstera, philodendron, pothos and hoya.

Clips

Small, plain, very useful.

Fifteen clips made from elephant grass and potato skins, with no plastic or metal. They hold stems to a pole, plank or stake and give as the stem thickens, so nothing gets pinched.

How to use: Clip loosely around the stem and the support, just below a leaf. Use with monstera, philodendron, pothos and hoya. They're biodegradable, so used clips can go in the compost.

Plant food

Dinner, for plants.

A water-soluble, all-purpose plant food with the major and minor nutrients, trace minerals and beneficial microbes. Stir it into the watering can and the plant handles the rest. Comes in a shaker, two pouch sizes and a bucket, for people who have clearly gone too far.

How to use: Dissolve in water and feed through spring and summer, following the label for how much and how often. Ease off in winter when growth slows. More is not better.

Where it goes

Up, not out.

In the pot · the monstera and its pole
On the stems · as it grows
In the watering can · spring and summer
Setting it up

Set the pole at repotting time, pushed to the bottom of the pot right behind the main stem. Clip the stems on loosely, just below a leaf, and tuck the aerial roots against the pole. Feed in spring and summer and skip the winter.

Weekly, when the top inch is dry
Monstera.
Light check · Bright, indirect light

The test: at noon, hold your hand a foot above the spot. Crisp shadow, bright. Soft shadow, medium. Barely a shadow, low. Overhead office lights count.

Pets

0 of 1 are pet-safe. The monstera goes up high, out of nibbling range.
