Specimen tree kit

The Small-Yard Statement.

One tree, done like a designer would.

A Japanese maple is the star, but a tree alone in a lawn looks lonely. Two hydrangeas and a skirt of catmint make it a planting instead of a lollipop.

Acer palmatum

Japanese Maple 'Bloodgood'

Burgundy all season. Fireworks in fall.

A sculpture that grows. Deep red leaves from spring to fall, then a final flare before they drop. Slow-growing, so the tree you plant is the tree you live with for a while.

Hydrangea arborescens

'Annabelle' Smooth Hydrangea

Snowball blooms. Forgives your pruning.

The hydrangea for people who have killed hydrangeas. It blooms on new wood, so a hard winter or an overenthusiastic pruning just resets it. Cut it back in late winter and it comes back with dinner-plate flowers.

Nepeta × faassenii

Catmint 'Walker's Low'

A lavender cloud that rabbits ignore.

The edging plant that edits itself. Silvery leaves, a haze of blue-violet flowers, and a habit of softening every hard edge it touches. Shear it back after the first flush and it blooms again.
