Eastern Redbud

Light

Full sun to part shade. It grows wild at woodland edges.

Water

Water weekly the first two summers. Fairly drought tolerant after that.

Planting and soil

Plant in spring or fall in well-drained soil. Pick the spot carefully; the taproot makes later moves hard.

Feeding

Usually none. A light spring feeding in poor soil.

Pruning

Prune right after flowering to remove crossing or dead branches. Keep the main branch angles wide.

Through the year

Pink flowers in March or April. Heart-shaped leaves all summer. Yellow fall color. Seed pods into winter.

If something's off

Canker can kill individual branches; cut them out in dry weather. Short-lived compared to oaks, often 20–30 years.

Why we stock it: A small native tree that marks the start of spring better than the calendar does.
