The story

An orchard for a balcony.

This apple grows as a single upright column, with fruiting spurs along the trunk instead of a spreading canopy. It tops out around 8–10 ft tall and 2–3 ft wide. Pink-and-white spring blossoms turn into small, crisp red apples with sweet white flesh.

Light

Full sun, six to eight hours.

Water

Weekly in the ground, more often in a pot. Don't let it dry out while fruit is sizing up.

Planting

Well-drained soil, or a container at least 18–20 in. wide with good potting mix. Keep the graft union above the soil.

Real apples in a spot where a regular tree would never fit.
