The story

Spring, ahead of schedule.

Large Dutch crocus in purple, white and striped violet, blended so the colors look planned. They open through cold soil and sometimes snow, feed the first bees, and multiply when left alone.

Light

Full sun to part shade. Under deciduous trees is perfect; the leaves aren't out yet.

Water

Water once after planting. After that, rain is enough.

Planting

Plant in fall, six weeks or so before the ground freezes, pointed end up. 3–4 in. deep. Lawns, bed edges, under trees.

The cheapest way to make March look intentional.
