The story

The crape myrtle with the bark.

Big clusters of white flowers from early summer into fall, on a multi-trunk tree that grows 20 to 30 feet. The bark peels away in patches of cinnamon and cream, which is the real reason to plant it. It resists the powdery mildew that plagues older crape myrtles.

Light

Full sun, six hours minimum. In shade it gets leggy and mildews.

Water

Weekly the first summer. Once established, only in extended drought.

Planting

Spring through early fall. Root flare at soil level, in any soil that drains. No amendments needed.

Months of white flowers, then the best bark of any small tree in the South.
