Light

Full sun, at least 6–8 hours.

Water

Water weekly the first summer, then only in drought. Never let it sit wet.

Planting and soil

Plant in spring in gritty, well-drained soil, a little high. Add gravel to clay or use a raised bed.

Feeding

None. Lean soil gives better scent and longer life.

Pruning

Shear by a third after flowering, staying above the woody base. Don't cut into old bare wood.

Through the year

Foliage stays through winter. Flowers June to July.

If something's off

Root rot from wet or heavy soil is the usual cause of death. Lavender is mildly toxic to pets.

Plays well with

Plant it with friends.
