Panicle Hydrangea

A full-size hydrangea show, pint-sized.

A panicle hydrangea that fits. Most panicle hydrangeas want an 8-ft circle. This one stays 2–3 ft, with upright cones that open creamy white and turn rose and burgundy as nights cool.

Hydrangea paniculata

Panicle Hydrangea

Vanilla, then strawberry. No spoon required.

White to strawberry, all season. Big cone-shaped flower clusters open creamy white in midsummer, blush pink, then deepen to strawberry red as nights cool. New flowers keep opening above the old ones, so all three colors show at once. Red stems hold the heavy heads up.

Hydrangea macrophylla

Bigleaf Hydrangea

Blue or pink. Your soil decides.

The reblooming mophead. The first bigleaf hydrangea bred to bloom on both old and new wood, so a hard winter or a bad pruning job doesn't cost you the summer. Big mopheads come blue in acidic soil and pink in alkaline soil.

How to plant it

Plant 4 ft apart and 3 ft out from the foundation, with the bigleaf in the shadiest spot. Want blue? Work sulfur in around the bigleaf each spring.
