Japanese Maple

The red Japanese maple everyone pictures.

The standard, for good reason. Deep burgundy-red leaves that hold color through summer, turning scarlet in fall. Small red winged seeds hang on after the leaves drop. It grows into a small, layered tree, 15–20 ft over many years.

Japanese Painted Fern

Silver for the shade garden.

A fern with a metallic finish. Fronds in silver and soft gray-green with wine-red stems and midribs. It forms a loose, arching clump that lights up the dark corners where flowers give up.

Hosta

Hosta

The classic white-edged hosta.

The one that always works. Deep green, heart-shaped leaves with a narrow, crisp white margin. Lavender flowers rise on tall stems in mid to late summer. It has been a standard for decades because it grows almost anywhere shady.
