The story
A hedge without the width.
A columnar yew with dense, dark green needles on upright branches. It makes a narrow screen or a formal pair by the door, and it handles shade better than most evergreens. Female plants carry red berries.
Light
Full sun to full shade. Shield from harsh winter sun and wind in the north.
Water
Weekly the first year. Then deep watering in dry spells. Never soggy.
Planting
Spring or early fall, root ball slightly above grade. Raised beds or slopes if your soil holds water.
Evergreen privacy in a strip too narrow for anything else.
