Hicks Yew

Light

Full sun to full shade. Shield from harsh winter sun and wind in the north.

Water

Weekly the first year. Then deep watering in dry spells. Never soggy.

Planting and soil

Spring or early fall, root ball slightly above grade. Raised beds or slopes if your soil holds water.

Feeding

Slow-release evergreen fertilizer in early spring.

Pruning

Shear after the spring flush, in early to mid summer. Yews regrow from old wood, so you can cut hard if needed.

Through the year

New growth in spring, shear in early summer, red berries on female plants in fall.

If something's off

Root rot in wet soil and deer browsing in winter. Every part except the red berry flesh is highly toxic to people and pets, seeds included.

Why we stock it: Evergreen privacy in a strip too narrow for anything else.
