The story

Wolfberries, by the handful.

A rangy, arching shrub with small purple flowers and bright red berries from summer to frost. The fruit is sweet-tart, a little like a cranberry crossed with a tomato. Tough, drought tolerant, and usually fruiting by year two.

Light

Full sun for the most fruit; part shade works.

Water

Weekly the first summer. After that, only in long droughts. Too much water dilutes the flavor.

Planting

Spring or fall in well-drained soil. Rich soil makes leaves, not berries.

Dried goji is expensive. A plant is not.
