The story

A crape myrtle that fits.

A compact crape myrtle with coral-pink flower clusters from early summer into fall. It stays about 6–10 ft, so it works as a large shrub, a small multi-stem tree or a container plant. Peeling bark keeps it interesting after the leaves drop.

Light

Full sun, six hours or more. Shade brings mildew and few flowers.

Water

Weekly the first summer. Drought tolerant once established.

Planting

Well-drained soil, any pH. In a pot, use one at least 18 in. wide.

Months of color from a plant that likes summer as much as you do.
