Clump of fine, arching maiden grass topped with feathery silvery-white plumes

Light

Full sun. In part shade it blooms less and the clump flops open.

Water

Water weekly the first summer. After that it rides out dry spells.

Planting and soil

Plant in spring or early fall with the crown level with the soil.

Feeding

None needed. Rich soil makes it lean.

Pruning

Leave it standing for winter. Cut it down to 4–6 in. in late winter, before green shoots appear.

Through the year

Slow to start in spring. Plumes from August. Orange-red leaves in fall, tan through winter.

If something's off

Miscanthus can self-sow where the growing season is long, and it's listed as invasive in some eastern states; cut the plumes before they shatter if seedlings show up. Old clumps die out in the center; divide in spring.

Plays well with

Plant it with friends.

Why we stock it: Finer texture and earlier plumes than the old-school maiden grasses, plus real fall color.

That's everything we know about growing it. Thanks for reading.
