Plant food

Dinner, for plants.

A water-soluble, all-purpose plant food with the major and minor nutrients, trace minerals and beneficial microbes. Stir it into the watering can and the plant handles the rest. Comes in a shaker, two pouch sizes and a bucket, for people who have clearly gone too far.

How to use: Dissolve in water and feed through spring and summer, following the label for how much and how often. Ease off in winter when growth slows. More is not better.

Where it goes

Safe at every height.

A high shelf
Under the sink · with the watering can
Setting it up

Fern by the window, out of direct sun. Prayer plant and baby rubber plant on a table where you will catch the prayer plant folding up at night. Spider plant on a high shelf so it can arch. Non-toxic means safe, not tasty; a chewed plant is still a sad plant.

The watering rhythm
Twice a week, have a feel
Fern, Prayer plant. Lightly damp, never soggy.
Weekly, when the top inch is dry
Spider plant.
Every 2–3 weeks
Peperomia. Seriously, leave it alone.
Light check · Medium, indirect light

The test: at noon, hold your hand a foot above the spot. Crisp shadow, bright. Soft shadow, medium. Barely a shadow, low. Overhead office lights count.

Pets

Every plant in this kit is listed non-toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA). Still, a chewed plant is a sad plant.
