All trunk, no sprawl. A columnar apple about 10 ft tall and 2 ft wide, with fruit held tight against one upright stem. The apples are yellow-gold, crisp and honey-sweet with a light tartness, ready in September.

An apple tree two feet wide.

An orchard for a balcony. This apple grows as a single upright column, with fruiting spurs along the trunk instead of a spreading canopy. It tops out around 8–10 ft tall and 2–3 ft wide. Pink-and-white spring blossoms turn into small, crisp red apples with sweet white flesh.

How to plant it

Plant 2 ft apart in full sun, or in 20 in. pots. Keep the two apples within 50 ft of each other for fruit. Thin to one fruit every 6 in. in early summer.
