The story

The navel orange that started it.

The original seedless navel orange, brought to California from Brazil in the 1870s and still the standard. Large, sweet, easy-to-peel fruit ripens in winter. It's self-fertile, so one tree is enough.

Light

Full sun outdoors. Indoors, a south window or grow light.

Water

Deeply when the top inch or two dries. Let pots drain fully.

Planting

Sandy, well-drained soil or a citrus potting mix. Keep the graft union above the soil.

Fresh oranges in the dead of winter, from your own tree.
