The story
The foundation shrub, done right.
A low, dense yew that grows wider than tall, with soft dark needles that stay green through winter. It takes shade, takes shearing, and grows back from hard cuts that would kill most evergreens.
Light
Sun to full shade. In hot climates it wants afternoon shade.
Water
Water weekly the first year. Established plants need water only in drought.
Planting
Plant in spring or fall in well-drained soil. Set the root ball slightly high if your soil is heavy clay.
One of the few evergreens that looks good in shade and forgives a bad haircut.
